Three headlines in the major newspapers and online signal a new era for Queensland coal mining in 2016. The long awaited Adani thermal coal mine in the Galilee Basin, about 350 km west of Mackay has finally been given the green light by the State government. With this latest announcement, comes the reality that the Galilee Basin project is one step closer with the� approval of three Adani mining leases.

It has been a long fight for approvals to begin constructing the mine for Indian-based Adani. They giant power and energy company finally secured final environmental approval and had also reached a financial settlement on compensation payouts with a Galilee Basin landholder last month.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the approved leases had undergone “extensive government and community scrutiny” and were a step towards securing jobs for region, with Adani estimating more than 5000 jobs expected to be generated during construction and more than 4000 during operation of the project.

Ms Palaszczuk said it marked a “new era of the resources sector continuing to show confidence in the Queensland economy. We are talking about thousands and thousands of jobs,”� she said.

The Queensland Premier said her Queensland Government supports this project. “We want to see jobs. We want to see economic development and also at the same time we want to see the environment protected”.

Mining and construction jobs at Adani

An Adani spokesman said, with the leases now approved, construction on the Carmichael thermal coal mine could start in 2017.� Civil works will centre around the massive rail project which will transport the majority of the coal to Abbot Point, where new port facilities will be constructed. Additional power, water, roadworks and the airport are also high on the agenda.

The mine has a few secondary approvals that have to be signed off� before the Carmichael mine can go full steam ahead. One of the biggest is a financial assurance between the company and the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection. This centres around Adani making sure the mine site environment is returned to its former state when mining ends.

Adani’s CEO said he was confident the secondary approvals will take place in 2016 and forecasts construction beginning in 2017.
