Adani Carmichael Mine gets Federal approval to proceed

Environment Minister Greg Hunt approves Australia’s biggest coal mine – 1000’s of QLD mining jobs for all

It’s official.. Adani can now begin construction of the multi-billion dollar Carmichael Coal mine in the Queensland Galilee Basin. The huge thermal coal mine is set to bring Queensland mining back to life and could kick-start a new wave of investment in the region.

For the mining sector, this is good news indeed after Adani fought tooth and nail to get the final approvals over the line.

However, with some of the strictest conditions in Australian history, the mine must proceed within these guidelines to become a reality. Green groups and mine development opponents have already said they intend to launch a legal challenge to overturn this new federal approval.

Adani management welcomed the new decision by the federalcourt, saying the initial legal challenges were a “technicality” which were triggered by an oversight by the Department of the Environment.

In a statement today, the company said it was always “confident in the soundness of the broader approvals, that the species involved had been protected by conditions, and that the technical error would be promptly rectified”.

The new decision will create thousands of construction jobs as the infrastructure is developed.A huge rail link will be built from the ship loading terminals at Abbot Point near Bowen, to the proposed mine over 350km away. This is a huge engineering project that has been awarded to Korean engineering company POSCO.

As far as building the mine and operating it, mining services company Downer EDI will take the reins with Komatsu getting the nod to supply 50 hybrid haul trucks to do the heavy hauling. It’s been estimated that there will be three open pits and two underground longwalls.

The thermal coal seams lie close to the surface so there is limited pre-stripping to do, which means production can start in a shorted time frame. Adani expects coal production to begin by 2017 as much of the coal from the Carmichael mine will be shipped directly to India to fire up their power generating plants.

The Adani Carmichael mine approval is history-making and will pave the way for other coal mines to get off the drawing board and into the pre-approval stages. Mining joint ventures by companies such as GVK and Hancock mining are planning to develop huge mines in the Galilee Basin.
