More NSW coal mine jobs
Another coal mine on the Liverpool Plains is one step closer, with BHP Billiton announcing last week its intention to develop a detailed mine plan for its Caroona project. Caroona`s acting head of projects Darren Swain said the completion of the Namoi Catchment Water Study in July paved the way for the company to progress its mining plans, having promised in 2009 to consider the outcomes of the study in any future mining proposal.

Newmont Mining Goes High Tech
Newmont Mining, which has four gold mines in Western Australia and the Northern Territory revealed plans to bring a global SAP system online in its Australian operations over the next two months. One of the big benefits of the project is that it will drive consistent processes, data and reporting across almost all of Newmont’s operations globally. The new IT system (called Pangaea) will create a foundation for a “global shared services strategy” with expected savings in the region of $35 to $40 million annually.

$64 Billion Investment In QLD Mining & Resource Sector
A `flood` of mining activity is still driving growth in the Australian mining industry. As of April there were 20 mining and gas projects in Queensland alone, amounting to more than $64 billion in investment. The volume of projects in the pipeline is a solid indication of the future growth of the sector and a good omen for existing mine workers or for people who are considering a mining career.

QLD Coal Tax Does Not Stack Up
Campbell Newman is not backing down from his recent announcements to increase royalties on coal companies. Royalties on every tonne of coal sold between $100 and $150 will be increased from a tax rate of 10% to a new 12.5%. Any coal traded over that price will be taxed 15%.

WA mine supplies 80% of China’s requirements
Supplying 30% of the world`s demand for a commodity is an impressive statistic, particularly when that demand includes providing around 80% of China`s requirements. Skills Shortage Creates Mining Job Opportunities
Ground-breaking research into the use of migrant workers in Australia`s resource industry has been unveiled at a Perth conference dedicated to overcoming the critical shortage of specialised skills in mining, oil and gas operations. The release of interim findings reports that temporary migrant workers play an essential role by filling highly-skilled mining vacancies that cannot be filled by local mining workers in the short term.
