Gold Coast could be FIFO hotspot

Mining giants, including billionaire Gina Rinehart`s Hancock Coal, are being wooed to set up a FIFO workers hub on the Gold Coast, Queensland. The Gold Coast City Council and Gold Coast Airport yesterday hosted executives from mining giants Hancock Coal, Xstrata, Waratah Coal and QGC to sell them on the city.

Mondephalous scores big in the Pilbara

Monadelphous Group has won a $75 million construction contract at BHP Billiton`s Jimblebar iron ore mine in the Pilbara. Monadelphous said the contract involved structural, mechanical and piping works at the mine, which is near Newman in the state`s north-west. This will create a lot of new mining jobs for the group.

Cashing-in on the next 30-50 years of Queensland mining activity

The mining and resource sector growth may be a little stunted at present, however Queensland mining activity still has another 30 to 50 years to cash in, a leading consultant of KPMG says. He said the `doom and gloom` surrounding the sector recently ignored the long-term need for workers and suppliers to service new and existing projects. Now is the perfect time to invest in yourself and get the skills to position yourself for a well paid career and future in the Queensland mining industry.

Wherever I lay my miners hat…

A new study commissioned by QLD Resources Council titled Workforce Accommodation Arrangement in the Queensland Resources Sector states nearly 65% of all FIFO miners were happy with their current accommodation arrangements. The study of 2,275 respondents showed workers in the residential dwellings as well as workers accommodation were satisfied and more than 60% of both residential workers and non-residential workers have been in the mining sector for five years or more.
