You may have heard of Gina Rinehart, the WA mining magnate who attracts media attention for all the wrong reasons at times.

However, Ms Rinehart hasgiven mining job seekers areason to smile – 1000 reasons actually.

Mining jobs in the Pilbara are set to soar once again as construction at the Roy Hill iron ore mine that is being built by Rinehart shifts up a gear. The Roy Hill project is located 280km south of Port Hedland in the iron ore mining region of Western Australia.

It’s estimated 1000 new workers will be required as Thiess are awarded the new contract for the construction of the mine’s iron ore processing plant at the remote site.

The Thiess contract to build the processing plant is estimated to be worth some $330 million. Samsung C&T, who are the lead project managers have stated the contract includes structural, mechanical, piping, electrical and instrumentation installation work.

In July this year, preparation is expected to start with some 1000 FIFO Roy Hill jobs to be offered in construction. The production plant is some size, therefore it’s estimated the workforce will have permanent jobs for about 14 months.

Thiess managing director Bruce Munro came out saying the contract allowed Thiess to enter a new business relationship with Samsung C&T.

“Thiess has established an industry-leading capability in these types of projects in the coal mining and CSG LNG sectors and we`re proud to further progress that capability with Samsung C&T in iron ore.

“We also have a long association with iron ore projects in the Pilbara and this project represents a continuation with a new client,” he said
