3500 NT Jobs – Ichthys Gas Project

3500 NT jobs will be required in the Territory during the peak of the four-year construction phase of the NT jobs Ichthys gas project near Darwin.

Operated by Japanese resource giant Inpex and its partners, the huge Ichthys Gas Field lies in the massive offshore Browse Basin in North West Australia.

Located 900 kilometres west-south-west of Darwin in the Timor Sea, the Ichthys Gas Field gas will be piped (when fully operational) to a processing plant at Blaydin Point in Middle Arm Peninsula in Darwin Harbour.

“The Ichthys project will provide 19% of N.T.`s Gross Domestic Product”

FIFO construction workers are already being housed in the accommodation village which is located in Howard Springs and consists of single air-conditioned rooms with en-suite facilities. The rooms are regularly serviced and have televisions with cable and free-to-air stations.

There are also medical facilities, large dining area and health and fitness areas.

Sean Kildare, Inpex General Manager said the project is on schedule, with the first batch of 200 workers moving into the accommodation village this week and a regular flow of new workers becoming involved up to 2016-17

“8 million tonnes of natural gas every year”

When it goes into production in late 2016 it will be producing 8 million tonnes of natural gas every year for 40 years, destined for overseas markets.

Mr Kildare allayed the fears of local businesses, explaining that after construction, the project will have a yearly expenditure of half a billion dollars over its 40 year lifespan.

When production begins in late 2016, the project will provide 19% of N.T.`s Gross Domestic Product.
