Rio Tinto Jobs - ABB $27 Mil Pilbara Power Station Upgrade

Rio Tinto $27 million Pilbara contract

Rio Tinto Cape Lambert $27 mil contract More construction jobs in the resource sector have been created as global mining and exploration company Rio Tinto awarded a$27 million contract to ABB power and automation technology group.

The project will enhance iron ore shipment and logistics by upgrading an existing power substation at the Cape Lambert port in Western Australia.

Cape Lambert located in the Pilbara region and the upgrade will allow the feed of electricity from a new power generation plant into the current transmission network and will boost power supply to support the expansion of the Cape Lambert port.

The project will allow more ship loading facilities and ramp up the capacity of the busy Pilbara port. Construction of a second 1400m jetty and associated bulk material handling equipment is also included in the project scope. The upgrades to the existing iron ore export infrastructure at the port will support increases in ore exports by a whopping 53 million tons per year.

ABB will design, construct and commission the upgrade to the substation. Some of the major supplies include four 220 kilovolt (kV) substation bays, power transformers and protection and remote communication and monitoring equipment and a SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition).

Taking advantage of the current technologies allowing remote access and automation management systems allows to total control of the power assets to be monitored from Rio Tinto`s Perth Operations Center, almost 1,500 kilometers away.

The operations center manages and controls the mining processes, rail transport, ship loading and infrastructure Rio’s Pilbara iron ore mining operations. Whilst the new contract will not directly benefit employment opportunities for Rio Tinto, jobs will be created for ABB and the local contractors supplying construction and technical services in the region. Construction jobs in the Pilbara have recently been hit by the suspension of major mining company expansion plans, so this new contract is welcomed news for qualified tradesmen looking for jobs in construction in WA.
