Rockhampton Regional Council is pushing to be named the regional Adani Carmichael FIFO hub by making a bid to own and operate the airport in the Galilee Basin.
The Mayor of Rockhampton, Margaret Strelow, said her vision for Rockhampton was to become a powerhouse for mining jobs and become a base for Adani Carmichael FIFO services.

If successful, Rockhampton will be offering end to end control of costs and scheduling of the services which is expected to cost about $20 million. In addition to this, they will also be giving Adani workers the opportunity to live in a city with the benefits of health and schooling.
The proposal is expected to create up to 1000 extra jobs in Rockhampton for generations to come.
“Our united council has a strong balance sheet, ownership of one of the top 15 airports in the country and locals who sit around the State and Federal cabinet table,” Mayor Strelow said.�
Already positioned as�one of the top 15 airports in the country, Rockhampton airport general manager Scott Waters also sees�the bid as an opportunity to lift passenger numbers�and ensure the airport is viable for generations to come.�
“We have the capacity, the capability and the management expertise to deliver an end to end aviation solution,”� he said.
Adani Carmichael Mining Jobs
According to Hinchliffe this project will�initially employ 5000 workers in the construction phase, then 4000 ongoing mining jobs.
“It’s important to note that declaring this proposal a significant project does not constitute Government approval or support for the project, this is just the start of the comprehensive EIS process.
“The draft TOR provides the framework for the EIS and I encourage all interested parties to get in and have their say.”
Coordinator General Keith Davies said the scale, potential effects and complexity of the approvals for the project required a rigorous EIS.
“The EIS will consider the potential environmental, cultural and socio-economic impacts on the local community,” Mr Davies said.
The proposed $4.1 billion Carmichael Coal Mine is located mostly in the Moray Downs cattle station while the proposed $6 billion railway development is in the Mackay and Whitsunday Regional Council areas.
The mine is about 160 kilometres north-west of Clermont.
