Output in BHP Billiton`s iron ore operations in the Pilbara has lifted 23 per cent to 49 million tonnes compared to this time last year and streamlining measures at the company`s Western Australian iron ore supply chain are being implemented.
This has been realised with an extra 220 million tonnes per annum capacity added, meaning a probable increase in WA jobs with BHP.
Chief Executive Andrew Mackenzie announced to shareholders at his first annual general meeting in London last week that “our pursuit of productivity gains and operating excellence is already yielding strong results”.
It’s likely BHP’s board will approve some or all of an expansion to as much as 270 million tonnes before the end of 2014. This could represent up to $US5 billion in investment.
Iron ore president Jimmy Wilson’s ability to sweat the Pilbara-region iron ore mines, railways and ship-loaders in WA amid BHP’s drive for increased productivity has raised the likelihood BHP’s board will approve some or all of an expansion to as much as 270 million tonnes before the end of 2014. This could mean up to $US5 billion in investment and comes as Rio Tinto also looks set to spend its own $US5bn to $US6bn on iron ore expansion in the Pilbara by the end of the year.
This relatively buoyant outlook from the big Australian mining companies is a welcome one for shareholders and workers seeking mining jobs who were hoping for a turnaround in the face of government and media reports the China-led resources boom was over.

Productivity gains also saw BHP`s Queensland coal operations reach an annualised production rate of 61 million tonnes.
The company said the result was underpinned by the continued ramp up of Daunia mine, record quarterly production at South Walker Creek and improved Coal Preparation Plant performance at Blackwater and Saraji.
BHP`s Petroleum and copper production targets had also exceeded expectations.
