Port Hedland new harbour study

BHP Billiton has released its environmental review for a new habour in Port Hedland.

It has released an environmental impact statement (EIS), stating that it is aiming to secure berths for eight bulk carriers, and allow room for future expansion.

This review is a major step towards doubling its iron ore output from the Pilbara, from 150 million tonnes per year to 350 million by 2020, according to The Australian.

Harbour nearing capacity

Despite being the world`s second largest iron ore port, Port Hedland`s inner harbour is nearing capacity following BHP`s announcement it will raise exports from the Pilbara to 220 million tonnes of iron ore a year by 2014.

It has already secured a capacity of 240 million tonnes annually from the inner harbour.
