Gas jobs are going to be the next big employment magnet for people hoping for a career in the well-paid resource sector.

Global LNG company BC Group announced it had reached a historic milestone in the development of the Queensland Curtis LNG project, as gas transported from the coal seam gas fields in the Surat Basin reached Curtis Island.

Curtis Island, located off the coast of Gladstone is where 3 LNG production and liquefaction terminals are being built to process the gas from the rich coal seams that are now being tapped at a ferocious rate.

Delivery of the first gas onto Curtis island heralds the completion of 540 km of pipeline construction consisting of over 46 000 lengths of one-metre diameter steel pipe over. A task that has taken 2 years to compete and is considered as the longest large-diameter buried pipeline in Australia.

Arrival of the gas will now create a flurry of gas jobs as commissioning work begins in earnest. The two LNG natural gas liquefaction plants on Curtis Island which are being developed BC Group will be the first to ramp up. The commissioning process is expected to begin in the first few months of 2014.

The LNG production terminal forms part of the integrated QCLNG project which has been under construction since 2010 and will provide cleaner hydrocarbon energy for export markets when completed.

“To have first gas on Curtis Island in a little over three years from project sanction is an immense achievement,” said BG Group CEO Chris Finlayson. “It is a testament to the expertise and dedication of everyone working on this vast and complex mega-project.

Thousands of gas jobs were created when Bechtel announced it would be the main recruiter for the project. The Curtis Island LNG project is now entering the final construction and commissioning stages with the probability to deliver first commercial LNG in the second half of 2014, and within the $20.4 billion budget.
