Resource 101 Australia

“Resource Mining 101” courses will be offered to Queenslanders by the State Government to meet skills shortages in the resource sector.

It is projected that the resources industry could create a further 38,000 jobs over the next four years.

Premier Anna Bligh will call mining bosses and mayors to a new jobs summit this month to help the industry fill labour shortfalls with Queenslanders, ahead of workers from interstate.

Ms Bligh hopes to convince thousands of unemployed people in Cairns, Hervey Bay and the Gold Coast to tap into the mining boom.

The Government will set up a co-ordination role to identify job opportunities within the sector and help link unemployed people to the high-paying work.

This will include helping people get training needed to work in the industry.

“Right now we’ve got big mining projects hungry for labour, hungry for skills and we’ve got parts of Queensland with higher unemployment,” Ms Bligh said.

“I think the size and scale of what we are on the cusp of is hard for people to grasp … in the gas industry alone in the next three years, three companies will between them spend $55 billion.”

Ms Bligh said the August 16 summit at the Gold Coast would help determine what opportunities could be found for the 57,000 unemployed in the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Wide Bay-Burnett and Far Northern regions.
