Isaac residents prefer new mining town

Residents of Queensland`s Isaac region would prefer a new town in the area over building serviced apartments and motels for FIFO miners.

Following the Isaac Regional Council`s Adaptive Communities process, a third of participants voted for the creation of a new town outside of Moranbah, according to the Daily Mercury.

The construction of a new town was one of six options residents had to choose from to assist the council in deciding what kind of accommodation would help it meet the mining boom.

This comes after the region called for a cap on mining camp construction and rejected BMA`s proposal to construct a 2500 bed mining camp for its Caval Ridge coal mine near Moranbah.

Massive push for family accommodation

Isaac mayor Cedric Marshall explained that there is a massive push for family accommodation over transient worker housing.

“There`s always going to be a certain amount (of mining camps) but we want to see the majority of families living in our region again,” Marshall said.

On top of BMA`s decision to source more FIFO miners for its Caval Ridge and Daunia coal mines in central Queensland, Anglo American has also announced its plans to construct two new underground coal mines, and 50 houses and units to accommodate them, in the Isaac region
