Fly in fly out mining jobs for Gold Coast

Queensland`s resource sector is involved in discussions with Gold Coast Airport on a deal that would see 2000 Gold Coast mining workers flying out to jobs in Queensland and NSW on a Monday and return on the weekend.

Mining companies now have a short Expression of Interest period to negotiate individually with flight operators to sign up for regular services to ferry workers to areas such as Mackay, Gladstone and Emerald. Individual airport lounges would be set up for mining companies.

The Gold Coast Airport, Gold Coast Tourism and Business GC started work on the fly in fly out plan for the city in April as a way of tapping into the resources boom and boosting employment opportunities.

“The whole thing is a win-win for both parties involved, the mining companies can’t get enough workers and we need the jobs,” mayor Ron Clarke said.

Mining Company Negotiations

Gold Coast Airport boss Paul Donovan started negotiations with the airlines in May, but the plan still needs approval by the mining companies.

Mine workers are already living on the Gold Coast and flying out to Mount Isa and Perth for work.
