The Hail Creek open cut coal mine in the Bowen Basin Region of Central Queensland, that is located 120 kilometers from Mackay, supplies up to eight million tonnes of hard coking coal to steel mills in Asia and Europe each year. Rio Tinto Coal Australia is a leading mining company in Australia with an established record for developing and managing world standard open cut, as well as underground, coal mines.

The Hail Creek Mine is an example of the company providing more than simply providing local employment opportunities and ensuring economic growth for the area as it also works to create positive outcomes for the wider Mackay Region.

About the Role:

Reporting to the production superintendent; you will be up-skilled to operate mobile plant equipment consisting of CAT 793 Haul Trucks, Komatsu 960 Electric Trucks, Terex MT 4400’s and CAT 777, 785 Water Trucks.

Successful applicants MUST have:

Minimum 7 months experience operating in quarry, small mine or civil environments on equipment including; but not limited to the following:

  • Moxy – mt41, mt31; CAT 725;
  • Komatsu HM300, HM400 Belly Dumper – CAT 776
  • Kress Hauler Rigid – CAT 773, 777, 785, 789;
  • Liebherr T282; Hitachi EH3500, EH4000
  • Water Trucks CAT 773, 777
  • Current Drivers License
  • Standard 11 Induction Training Induction
  • Current Coal Board Medical High levels of initiative and the ability to work well under pressure
  • Your key focus is safety with a high attention to detail to abide by site procedures
  • A medical including drug and alcohol testing is required as part of the recruitment process
  • Must reside in the Mackay region or be willing to relocate

Duties and Responsibilities:

Operate mobile plant equipment, consisting of CAT 793 Haul trucks, Komatsu Electric 960E Haul trucks and Terex MT 4400 Haul trucks fitted with Modular systems.

      The Queensland Bowen Basin contains the largest coal reserves in Australia. This major coal producing region contains one of the world’s largest deposits of bituminous coal.

      The Basin contains much of the known Permian coal resources in Queensland including virtually all of the known mineable prime coking coal. It was named for the Bowen River, itself named after Queensland’s first Governor, Sir George Bowen.

      The Caterpillar 777 is a 100-ton haul truck, typically used in open pit mining, manufactured by Caterpillar Inc. The first model of Caterpillar 777 was introduced in 1974. Its diesel engine is capable of putting out 870 horsepower. The 777D, introduced in 1996, was powered by a 938-horsepower diesel.

      This truck is one of the entry-level haul trucks most new operators will learn on. Once competent, they will move up to the larger 785, especially when working on a coal mining site.

      The Caterpillar 785 Haul Truck, Dump Truck or off-road truck as they are called in the U.S. are still used across the world in open-cut mining operations. This huge truck has proven it’s worth for many years and has often been the entry-level truck for new operators.

      Progressing when competent, operators move up to the larger CAT 793 and CAT 797 truck, giving them the confidence and ability to handle larger load capacities on a range of challenging mine sites.

      The 793F has a load cpacityof 226.8 ton (US) and a top speed of 60 kilometres an hour. It's a turbocharged air-to-air aftercooled diesel engine that has enhanced power management capability for maximum hauling performance. The C175-16 is a 16-cylinder, four-stroke design that uses long, effective power strokes for optimum efficiency.
