Rio Tinto Coal Australia`s new $1.3bn Clermont thermal coal mine in central Queensland, is ground breaking above and below the surface.

It will produce more than 12m tonnes of high quality thermal coal a year from 2013; and 27% of the mine`s 380 workforce will be women “� well above the state industry average of 11%. They will work in non-traditional roles such as truck drivers and plant operators and 8.5% will be indigenous women.Clermont coal will be sent by a 13.3km conveyor to the Blair Athol Mine, then transported by an existing rail network to port for export to Japan, Korea and Thailand. Blair Athol Mine is flagged for closure in 2016.

From turning of the sod in 2008, 260 experienced contract operators and 400 employees have constructed the Clermont Mine which has reserves of 189m tonnes of thermal coal and a mine life of about 17 years.

During operations it will support more than 3000 jobs in the region and contribute $500m a year to the state`s GDP, as well as $100m to state coffers in royalties and freight charges.

Rio Tinto is a major producer of Queensland`s coal exports. 180m tonnes last year worth $25bn in sales.
