36.7% of advertised Queensland mining job applicants don’t have a current or valid Standard 11
The job ads [SEEK, JORA, Indeed, Adzuna] were targeted at mining operators to work in the Bowen Basin region of Queensland; and listed one of the requirements to be a current Standard 11.
For those who don’t know what the Standard 11 is; it’s a Work Health and Safety training program made up of 6 units of competency.
Briefly; this is what the Standard 11 course is made up of;
Course Outline
- General mining overview
- Legislation
- General safety
- Managing workplace hazards
- Risk management
- Isolation and tagging procedures
- Traffic and mobile equipment procedures
- Emergency procedures
- Life saving first aid
- Fire fighting and fire prevention
- The environment
- The work process
It’s not uncommon to see 30-40% of the jobs advertised asking for a current Standard 11 as well as other site-specific inductions such as the BMA Induction.
Whether you are just starting out applying for mining jobs, or maybe you are a contractor who needs to be on site; either way, if you want to work in Queensland on a mine site, you must have a current Standard 11.
(The Standard 11 is valid for 5 years and if you don’t let it lapse more than 6 months, you can do a refresher for a fraction of the cost).
