Rio Tinto mining jobs

A campaign launchedApril 27by mining giant Rio Tinto, hopes to fill 6000 mining vacancies across $22 billion worth of mining projects either underway or about to begin in Australia. About two-thirds of these mining job vacancies are at its 14 West Australian mining sites.

This unprecedented campaign is the first of its type and includes a 1300 MINING hotline.

It is believed that most mining job positions need to be filled within the four-month campaign, with many available now. Some candidates will be first in line for jobs as they become available across 30 sites later this year.

It will no doubt start a battle with other large mining players such as BHP Billiton and Gina Rinehart`s Hancock Prospecting to secure skilled workers for their thousands of mining job vacancies on upcoming mining projects such as Gina Rinehart’s Roy Hill Pilbara iron ore project.

More training opportunities for young Australians needed

Rio Tinto is looking to recruit mining-ready tradespeople, operators, geologists, planners, engineers and project professionals. Federal Skills Minister, Chris Evans, said Rio Tinto should target the local labour market first and include mining training opportunities for young Australians.

“I know they `ve been increasing their commitment to local training and I know they prefer to have Australian mine workers if they can,” Senator Evans said.
