In its fourth deal since the end of last month, Leighton subsidiary, construction and mining contractor Thiess, has won almost $2bn in new contracts including a $180 million contract with BMA`s Caval Ridge mine project in central Qld. This is good news for workers looking to get their start in the mines.

Thiess’s work on the Caval Ridge open-cut coalmine will start this month and will include the construction of heavy-haul roads as well as early works for a product stockpile and conveyor area. It also includes drainage infrastructure and creek diversions, and the handling of nearly seven million cubic metres of material.

This week, Thiess announced that it had finalised a $325m contract with BG Group to build six field-compression stations and a processing plant in the Surat Basin, which is near Dalby, to service the Queensland Curtis LNG project – also a $1bn contract at OZ Minerals’ Prominent Hill copper and gold project in South Australia to extend their mining operations.

Qld, SA and WA mining contracts

Thiess and Belgian company Besix recently secured a $260m contract to jointly develop a port in Western Australia’s north.

It was Thiess’s second contract on the Wheatstone project, following a tunnelling deal with Chevron.
